Home Living : November 10th 2009
HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, November 10, 2009 7 Open-shut case » ADVERTISING FEATUREHOMELIVING Archicentre has called on parents of young children living in multi-storey homes to modify windows to prevent them falling out. The call follows the recent death of a toddler who fell from the window of a third-floor flat. Archicentre managing director and Kidsafe Victoria president Robert Caulfield says there has been a number of child deaths and injuries in the last few years throughout Australia from window falls. He said the main problem is children jumping or playing on beds near windows. ''The most dangerous situation involves aluminium sliding windows which provide a large unobstructed opening when fully open,'' Mr Caulfield says. ''Some parents think that flyscreens provide a barrier, but a small child jumping on a bed will go right through a flyscreen if they hit it hard.'' He says Australia's building code limits the width of openings in stair balustrades to 125mm to prevent children falling through and similar precautions should be taken with upper-floor windows. Sliding aluminium windows can be modified by drilling a hole in the bottom track and putting in a self-tapping screw at the back of the opening part of the window to prevent it from opening to its full width, Mr Caulfield says. ''Similar modifications can be made to wind-out windows,'' he says.
