Home Living : November 17th 2009
6 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, November 17, 2009 Just call the pool doctors HOMELIVING » ADVERTISING FEATURE ASK THE EXPERTS Graham Murray finds he is strapped for time, and maintaining the family swimming pool is a big ask. Mr Murray wants to know if he can leave the maintenance to someone reliable. Pool Doctor Triclean owners Nigel Tang and Peter Legaz, who became firm friends while Sea Scouts 20 years ago and are now business partners, can ably assist with pool cleaning and maintenance. What exactly does your pool service cover? Our regular service includes scooping the debris on the pool surface, brushing the waterline, giving the pool a vacuum, backwashing and cleaning the filter, and emptying the skimmer and pump lint baskets. We also test and balance the pool water. As well, we check all the equipment and generally take the headache out of maintaining the pool and equipment, so you can simply enjoy it. How important is it to keep my pool water balanced? Keeping the pH at the correct level can make your chlorine work up to 10 times more effectively, therefore reducing chlorine use. Balanced water keeps the pool looking clear and feeling great on your skin, preventing irritation to swimmers' eyes. It also prolongs the life of the pool surface and equipment, preventing corrosion. If your water is balanced but still looks dull, the filtration might need attention. Replacement of filter and sand should be undertaken every five years. Our pool pump is about five years old and is running very loudly. Do I need a new one? It depends on the condition of the pump. Provided it isn't too rusty and corroded, it sounds as though the bearings on the pump need replacing, as they wear over time. This can be done for less than half the cost of a new pump. We can carry out all types of pump repairs, so check with us before buying a new one. Can I reduce energy use to save on running costs in the pool? There are a couple of ways you can reduce your energy use for your pool equipment. If there is a smart meter on your power board you can save money by running the pool at night. Increase your pool's cleaning efficiency and reduce running time. Pressure cleaners are so efficient they only need to run two hours a day to keep your pool clean. Use energy-efficient heating: new-generation gas heaters, low-energy heat pumps or solar pool blankets. We are considering installing heating to the pool to extend the season. Can we talk to you about it? We can advise on the most efficient and economical means of heating a pool and spa.
