6 HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, November 17, 2009 ............................................... HOMELIVING Child-safe windows » ADVERTISING FEATURE A string of accidents involving children falling out of high-rise windows in recent years has prompted safety experts to call for homes and apartments to be fitted with window locks or barriers. A five-year audit of trauma cases at the Sydney Children's Hospital released last December found that, while serious injuries for children had declined overall, falls from windows had risen. The majority of falls are through flyscreened open windows. The director of trauma at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Danny Cass, has written to the State Government urging window locks and barriers to be compulsory in new homes. Dream Baby has taken the initiative and developed a safety lock especially for horizontal and vertical aluminium sliding windows -- the F166 Dream Baby sliding window lock. Dream Baby director of product development Carolyn Ziegler said one of the advantages of being an Australian company is that it can originate and develop products according to local needs and specifications. ''Our new window lock has been designed to fit the kind of windows that are typically found in Australian homes,'' she said. The Dream Baby sliding window lock works by limiting how wide a window can be opened. To install it easily (no drilling), caregivers are instructed to position and clamp the lock on to the track of the frame, so that the window cannot open wider than 10cm. Windows secured at this height or gap help prevent children from falling out and from getting their heads stuck. The lock is made of brass for added strength and works with the use of an allen key to secure the lock. The Dream Baby sliding window lock retails for $9.95 for a pack of two. Plan your kitchen » ADVERTISING FEATURE Cooking for the family, entertaining friends or just whipping up something quick will be easier in a well-planned kitchen from the quality range of appliances at Bunnings Warehouse. With so many options for ovens, including under-bench and freestanding options offering the convenience of an oven and cook top in one, it's hard to go past Bunnings. Also see rangehoods and cooktops in brands such as Westinghouse, Technika, Everdure, Bellini and Elba. Kitchen buyer Andrew Op de Coul said as a general rule, if you design your kitchen in a way that is convenient for you, cooking will be enjoyable. ''There are a number of things to consider when choosing the correct appliances for your kitchen,'' he said. ''You need to make sure what you install is fitted for a purpose. Ask yourself what you need it for. Are you updating an old appliance, doing a total kitchen makeover or doing a retrofit? ''We have a number of appliances available to suit all needs. Selecting one appliance from the other can be daunting, so always ask a Bunnings team member for help in choosing the option that is right for you. ''Ovens can be difficult to compare. Always consider the capacity, so think about what you'll be cooking. Also check the internal height of the oven, making sure you can roast a chicken or lamb at the same time.'' Mr Op de Coul said that if you plan on grilling and baking at the same time you'll need a separate griller. ''The price of an oven can vary depending on a number of design and function elements and, in particular, where it has been designed, warranty length and brand recognition.''
