Home Living : January 26th 2010
4 HLW - HOME LIVING: WEST, Tuesday, January 26, 2010 Smart ways HOMELIVING EnergyAustralia is urging homeowners to investigate five steps to energy- efficient living. Energy-efficiency expert Paul Myors says following the steps will keep a lid on energy use, save money and cut greenhouse emissions. ''Homes are getting bigger, which means more lighting, heating and cooling, and we're filling them with bigger appliances,'' he said. By following these steps a household of four people can save as much as $360 a year off the energy bill and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 30 per cent. Now is also a good time to take advantage of government rebates -- such as $1200 for ceiling insulation, $3000 for solar hot water and $10,000 green loans. Eliminate wasteful standby power by turning off appliances at the power button or, better, still at the power point. This will save as much as $100 a year. A ban on electric hot water systems is expected soon so it's a good time to consider switching to a gas solar system or to install a heat pump. Hot water is the biggest energy user in the home. Convert your electric hot water to solar, heat pump or natural gas and save up to three tonnes of CO2 a year and up to $250 a year off bills. Rebates of up to $3000 are available. Old fridges can use two to three times the electricity of a newer fridge. Getting rid of the old fridge can save up to $200 a year on bills and reduce greenhouse by up to one tonne a year. Gas has about a third of the greenhouse emissions of electricity. Gas heating is about 80 per cent efficient compared to electricity's 30 per cent.
