FLEXO Magazine : January 2010
10 FLEXO JANUARY 2010 www.flexography.org Today 's workplace requires multitasking by every em- ployee, so the 2010 National Environmental, Health and Safety Conference is set to provide attendees with the tools and information to accomplish this goal. Business own- ers, plant managers operations managers, or anyone who is involved in adopting sustainable printing practices and holds oversight responsibilities for environmental, health, safety, or human resources; plus suppliers of EHS equipment and services, should consider attending. Themed "Printing for a Sustainable Future," NEHS 2010 will be held in Indianapolis, IN, on March 15--17. It is the only na- tional event for members of all segments of the graphic com- munications industry who are seeking to gain knowledge in the areas of sustainability, safety, environmental and human resources. Attendees will discover ideas on how to become a certified Sustainable Green Printer (SGP Printer), respond to health care related benefits, support customers in meeting their sustainability program goals, and successfully integrate best practices throughout a printing operation. Now in its 15th year, NEHS is a collaborative effort of the Foundation of Flexo- graphic Technical Association, Printing Industries of America, Specialty Graphic Imaging Association and National Asso- ciation of Printing Ink Manufacturers. SESSIONS NEHS 2010 kicks off on with the Keynote Session "Extreme Recycling at Subaru," led by Denise Coogan, manager, safety and environmental compliance for Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc. "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" is the mantra of Subaru's sole U.S. auto manufacturing plant in Lafayette, IN, which produces up to 200,000 cars per year, including half of the Subaru Legacy, Outback and Tribeca models sold in the country. Subaru's plant set a "green" standard in 2004 when it became the first "zero landfill" auto factory in the U.S. with 99 percent of waste from the plant being recycled. Coogan will speak about the operational decisions, culture and benefits that have accrued from Subaru's unflinching focus on environmental stewardship and how you can apply them to your facility. "Conversations with your Customers," a previously well received general session is back by popular demand. Print buyers will discuss how you can play a key role in assisting your customers in meeting their sustainability objectives. This panel of print customers will discuss the important role that their suppliers play in supporting their efforts in meeting the objectives of their current sustainability programs. The perennial session, "On the Radar Screen," will cover what is on the regulatory horizon for the printing industry. You will hear what you need to know as you navigate environmen- tal, safety, health and human resource issues. With the intense focus on sustainability and being "green" it is essential that companies have an in-depth understand- ing of the rules covering what someone can and cannot say about a product regarding its environmental friendliness. The "Environmental Marketing" presentation will help attendees understand what the ground rules are for promoting the "green" aspects of your product and provide a discussion and update on the Federal Trade Commission's revision to the "Green Guides." (See FLEXO March 2009, page 56.) Three certified SGP Printers will provide an open discus- sion of their efforts and activities related to becoming certified by the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership, as well as their experiences and observations on the benefits and values of the SGP certification. Jay Downey of FTA member-company C & H Packaging will represent the flexo industry. With the economy taking a turn for the better, NEHS 2010 attendance is expected to surpass 2009's bevy of attentive listeners.
