Home Living : February 16th 2010
HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, February 16, 2010 7 Ready for veggies HOMELIVING In the garden Judy Horton is an adviser for Yates The interest in homegrown veggies shows no sign of abating, with home gardeners digging up lawns, filling pots and replacing old flower beds to make room for productive patches. And, as summer favourites like tomatoes, beans and zucchinis begin to fade, it's time to start planning and planting for winter and spring. Be hard-hearted and pull out any summer veggies that are past their best. You'll find that, as the weather cools, plant growth slows right down so it's wise to get new veggies in as soon as you can. This way, they canhave as much growth as possible before the cold weather arrives. Before you plant, dig some organic matter (compost or aged manure) into the soil. And don't forget that veggies are particularly hungry, so it's also important to add some complete fertiliser (Dynamic Lifter pellets are good). Think back to what you've grown in that spot over the summer and make sure that any replacements are unrelated. For example, don't follow summer beans with winter-growing broadbeans. Broccoli, spinach or carrots -- which come from quite different plant families would be better. There are plenty of veggies that are suitable for planting in the next couple of months, including beetroot, cabbages, lettuce, leeks, onions, peas and parsnips.
