FLEXO Magazine : February 2010
13 FIRST Operator Certification program. An early supporter of the program is General Mills Inc. In Nov. 2009, FTA Education Director Joe Tuccitto visited with the long-time FIRST proponent with a dual agenda. "One purpose of the trip was to provide them with an update of what's new in FIRST 4.0; particularly the standards that we reference, such as CGATS TR- 012. We discussed how FIRST incorpo- rates such information, and how flexo can aim for it. Then we talked about the FIRST certification program at the press and prepress level. They don't understand why all printers are not doing this." Packaging and graphics teams at General Mills saw FIRST Opera- tor Certification as not just a way to improve their process, but as a way for printers to prove that their operations are under control. According to Rory Berg, senior prepress associate, FIRST Operator Certification shows him "that the printer knows what it's doing, and that it can hit the same color time after time after time." On Dec. 11, FTA offered a free We- binar to all CPC members discussing the three-level certification program. Attendees, including several active members of FTA's CPC Leadership Council, were given an in-depth look at the core goals and learning outcomes of the individual courses. In a confer- ence call meeting several weeks later, CPC Leadership Council members praised the development of the pro- gram. They referred to it as a "big deal" for the industry. One council member noted that he was very conscientious when he asked his printers to spend money. Another lauded the Virtual Campus and the fact that all courses were available online, eliminating the expense and lost time associated with travel. "Today 's flexo industry is not where it was 10 and 15 years ago," said Tuccitto. We've done it, we're here: We have proved to our customers that we are better than other print processes. Flexo is no longer the red-headed stepchild of the packaging industry. Now that we've proved it, though, we've raised our customers' expectations. So it's time to push flexo to the next level. But to do that, we have to do it together." To learn more, call 704.588.3371 or Toll Free 800.438.3111 Quality, consistency and efficiency in a pressroom translates into lower production costs.
