FLEXO Magazine : February 2010
20 FLEXO FEBRUARY 2010 www.flexography.org FORUM 2010 SESSION CHAIRS Emerging Trends/Technology Session John Anderson, Eastman Kodak David Galton, Asahi Photoproducts Europe FIRST Session Eric Ferguson, EskoArtwork Scott Gilbert, Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. Flexo 101 Session Jay Sperry, Clemson University Malcolm Keif, Cal Poly FQC Session Paul Lodewyck, Flint Group Al Bowers, R.R. Donnelly Ink Session John Edwards, Sun Chemical Corp. Todd Mannira, Brand Image Prepress Session Mike Butler, Southern Graphic Systems David Haradon, IPA Substrates Session Rick Rosenberger, Solo Cup. Co. David Nunez, International Paper Sustainability Session Colleen Twomey, MacDermid Printing Solutions Paul Kearns, Exopack FTA TODAY and alliance. The knowledge and expertise that is contained within the FTA membership drives our purpose. I have been fortunate to work with all of these subject matter experts to communicate, educate and ultimately enhance all of our industry experiences. Coffman: When I was asked to co-chair this year's Forum and chair the 2011 Forum, it was a great honor. And then I thought, how am I going to be able to do this? It is amazing to see how many individuals within our industry have offered to help us this year and next year. Being a part of all this has opened my eyes about the unselfish individuals who make up our industry and has opened doors for me within our industry. Q: What value do you see in offering (and attending) the FIRST Operator Certification training the day before Forum's official kick-off? Why? Engelke: At Forum 2009 I was approached by an attendee who asked why we didn't offer a "pressman" session, one that would focus on the needs and technical requirements of the resources executing all of what we strive to achieve. I asked Joe Tuccitto how we could make this happen, utilizing FIRST, TEST and subsequent educational assets we already possess. For those who know Joe, his passion for education, and his drive to make things happen, you will understand when I say the question brought a twinkle to his eye and a quiver to his voice. Offering the Level I certification starts every attendee down the path of improving efficiency, communication, print quality and ultimately, flexography. Joe is making it happen. Coffman: I got my start in this industry as a press operator many years ago and I wish that I would have been afforded the opportunity to be a part of this type of session. My hope is that printers who are sending several individuals to this year's Forum will send some pressmen to take advantage of the FIRST Operator Certification training. I know that if they do, they will be very pleased with the end results. Q: Do you have a personal message for current and pro- spective Forum attendees, speakers and INFO*FLEX exhibitors? Engelke: The most important message anyone can take from Forum is get involved! Feedback from the surveys indi- cated that members who attended Forum were so impressed, they return year after year. All of the membership needs to experience Forum and network your way into getting involved with your industry. Coffman: I echo our 2010 Forum chair 's sentiments---get involved! This industry has given so much to me and my family over the years, I feel that my involvement is the least I can do. I encourage everyone to continue to promote and support our industry and the many events that are available to us all. I am positive that we will all have a great experi- ence at Forum 2010. "My hope is that printers who are sending several individuals to this year's Forum will send some pressmen to take advantage of the FIRST Operator Certification training. I know that if they do, they will be very pleased with the end results." ---Mark Coffman, FFTA Forum 2010 Vice Chair
