Home Living : February 23rd 2010
HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, February 23, 2010 7 The smallest room gets a makeover While bathrooms have become the new showroom of the home, the humble toilet has been out of the design spotlight for decades. Today's designers have shifted their attention to this with toilets entering the fashion stakes. Hot on the heels of the Globo Open Space range of washbasins, where shape and design are used to create better functionality and an increased sense of space in a bathroom, a collection of four organically shaped toilets has been added. The Open Space Concept is the brainchild of leading Italian bathroom specialist Ceramico Globo. With more than 20 years at the forefront of bathroom design, Sanitaryware engaged award-winning designer Antonio Pascale to develop a timeless, contemporary range that is minimalist in shape yet complex in its versatility. Each toilet in the Open Space collection is available in crisp white and features the smooth curves of a crucible or pod and can seemingly float above the floor (in the case of the wall-hung models). Wall-hung and wall-faced (floor- mounted) toilets are available in compact and regular sizes, each with a concealed in-wall cistern. There is also a floor-standing classic wall-faced toilet suite (where the cistern is visible). All models of basin and toilet in the Open Space range bring a sense of luxury and tactile design to any style and size of bathroom. Bathroom trends » ADVERTISING FEATURE Damien Cool from Argent Australia highlights new trends for bathrooms. The Avant-Garde Materials used in others areas of the home are being introduced into the bathroom. These include thick floor coverings, upholstered pedestals and flexible plastics. For bathroom ware, hard edges and sharp corners are being replaced with soft, smooth contours. The ultimate symbol of this is a softly wrapped, freestanding bath. The Green The focus remains on sustainable and energy-efficient products. A host of technical features can be added to bathroom products to save resources without sacrificing comfort and convenience. As well, ecologically sound material and highly durable fittings are coming on to the market. The Light The master bathroom is becoming a sanctuary, where people are spending more time relaxing. The bathroom is brighter, with windows, skylights and mood lighting. The Toilet-Free A trend we're starting to see is the ''privatisation of the toilet'', where the toilet area is sectioned off or the toilet is installed in a private room. This not only provides more space in the bathroom but is increasingly practical for busy households.
