Home Living : March 23rd 2010
HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, March 23, 2010 7 ............................................ HOMELIVING Find those seasonal knick-knacks Easter table decorations can be anything from beautiful to whimsical, depending on your own sense of style. You may want something for a centrepiece for your dinner table or an adorable vignette for the top of the fireplace mantle. No matter what you love, or what your budget is, there is something out there for everyone. Some details to consider when putting together your centrepiece or vignette: Colours should complement each other and the room. Balance is important. Things should not be symmetrical necessarily, but should have form and balance. Interest is created by using different heights, textures, colours or shapes. If your centrepiece will be on the dining table, the tallest item should be low enough for people to see each other over it. If you love antiques and vintage items, holidays are a great time to create displays that highlight your collections. You can either display them en masse or create vignettes with several items that are related. Some vintage Easter collectables are: Tin chocolate moulds with an Easter motif. They come in different sizes and shapes, but the most popular continue to be the bunny characters. Postcards. For collectors, the most popular postcards were created between 1895 and 1920. Lolly holders. Made of everything from fine China to papier mache, lolly holders are great to use as centrepieces. They can hold flowers, lollies, dinner rolls or just be part of the vignette that you create. Salt and pepper shakers. Figurative holiday motifs can be used as salt and pepper shakers and placed at individual places at the table or arranged in conjunction with other holiday China. A tastier table » ADVERTISING FEATURE With the popularity of MasterChef and My Kitchen Rules, more Australians are ditching takeaway and cooking up a storm for family and friends. You might have the recipe, ingredients and wine under control, but don't forget the little touches. Here are a few tricks for Easter. Plastic placemats and paper serviettes won't do your masterpiece justice. A beautiful tablecloth set with colourful fabric napkins can work wonders, as it adds warmth and a sense of occasion to the table. It's important to adapt the setting to the time of day, as a lunch, afternoon tea and dinner party will have different requirements. For Easter, get the appropriate prints and colour co-ordinate your setting. Proper napkins set in rings and that stunning candle will go a long way. Lunch is often more of a casual occasion than dinner. To make your table setting less formal (while keeping it stylish and attractive), use a lighter colour theme when choosing tablecloths and napkins and arrange beautiful vases on the table with freshly cut flowers from the garden -- the more colourful, the better. For the extra enthusiastic, follow the lead of My Kitchen Rules and give each guest a menu outlining what you will be serving. Fold your napkins (get online to see the different ways) and place one at each setting. This can work well for both lunch and dinner parties. More tips for Easter at dandi.com.au, 9555 1166.
