Home Living : March 23rd 2010
4 HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, March 23, 2010 Preparing for the winter » ADVERTISING FEATUREHOMELIVING This Easter is the ideal time to start preparing for the cooler months ahead. Here's a checklist to prepare your home and garden for the cooler months ahead. AROUND THE HOUSE: Store summer stuff. Wrap, pack and fold all summer clothing, shoes, bedding, bath, kitchen and decor items, then store them in heavy plastic containers with locking lids. Place the containers in your garage and you'll have more room in the house for your winter attire. Pest-proof your house. Take the time to thoroughly check the outside of your house for any areas that provide entry for rodents, small animals or other unwanted household pests. Insulate. Insulating will not only help to keep you and your family warm, but it will also save on heating bills. AROUND THE GARDEN: Install a gutter guard. This will prevent falling autumn leaves from getting stuck in your gutters and drains, increase the longevity of your gutters, and reduce cleaning time when spring arrives. Shape up your shed. As with any timber, it is vital that sheds, fences and outdoor furniture are treated to protect them against the elements. Tidy the leaves. Buy a leaf-blower to keep lawns and pathways clear of slippery leaves and twigs. Love your lawn. Although grass appears to grow slower in the autumn, the roots grow deeper to prepare for winter. Fertilise and reseed your lawn. Save water. Autumn is a great time to install a water tank and collect water in the wetter months of the year.
