HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, April 6, 2010 7 Mix Bobby Brown with a dash of Dorian Grey » ADVERTISING FEATURE Ever wondered about who gets the job of naming paint colours and how they do it? Here are some interesting facts on paint colour names: So many names out there More than 100,000 paint colour names are in use worldwide. In Australia there are 50,000 colours on paint databases. Where did paint names originate? Paint names can be traced back to the mid-1800s. One of the earliest was chrysophyle, which was the original colour used to paint the Golden Gate Bridge in 1846. Most original colour names were derived from the minerals, pigments and dyes that made up the colour. The semi-precious stone, lapis lazuli, was used to produce a pigment known as ultramarine, now a popular colour descriptor, as in Ultramarine Blue. The strangest paint colour names Dead Salmon, Elephant's Breath, Gargoyle Growl, Atomic Vomit Green. Some clever or popular colour names Dorian Grey, Seductress, Bobby Brown, Final Straw, Vixen, Espresso Syrup. Why are there so many paint names? Paint companies always look for original names to avoid confusion when you ask for a colour in a paint shop. There are many descriptors of white: Bohemian White, Chalk White, Crisp White, Snowy White, Whisper White, Quaker White. Who names them? Usually a colour specialist in a paint company selects colours for each product range and names them. How many names do they have to think up every year? Anywhere from 50 to 3000 a year. How do they choose the names? The most common paint names come from food, geographical areas, flora and fauna. For example, Baby Seal, Grey Seal, Chalk White USA and Chalk White NSW. Fashion catwalks are an indicator of what paint colours will become popular. In the Milan Fashion shows in June 2009 a deep blue purple was used by some designers. This colour is now in paint ranges. A lesson from the movies In The Devil Wears Prada Miranda, the editor of Vogue, chastises her new assistant Andrea for her lack of interest in fashion. Miranda points out that her lumpy blue sweater is ''not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean". Cerulean Blue has long been a hot catwalk shade. In 1999 Pantone named Cerulean Blue as the official colour of the millennium. More tips: paintplace.com.au Name game Seductress or Atomic Vomit Green? What would you want on your walls?
