Home Living : April 20th 2010
HLC - HOME LIVING: CENTRAL, Tuesday, April 20, 2010 1 ............................................ HOMELIVING Simple ways to green your home There is a common misconception that being eco-friendly requires expensive gizmos and gadgets and time-consuming tasks. By simply updating basic products around the home, like a water- efficient shower head or fluorescent light globe, you can do your bit for the planet, says Mitre 10 expert David Collard. Mr Collard said opting for green products could result in long-term savings. ''It's certainly no secret that using fewer natural resources such as water and gas results in cheaper utility bills. It's great for the environment, and the hip pocket,'' he said. Mr Collard explained that opting for green choices doesn't mean sacrificing quality. Far from their humble beginnings, most products, such as water-saving shower heads, have quality options at varied prices -- from the entry level to the top-end. ''The Aerobin Compost System is as revolutionary as they come. It is not only top of the range. It is also one of the most environmentally friendly compost bins available. Unlike any other containment system, the Aerobin composts aerobically, dramatically reducing household carbon emissions and helps the average household divert 50 per cent of its waste away from landfill, into compost," Mr Collard said. Going back to basics, he said, was also a good way to reduce the environmental impact in the home and garden. ''Take weeding. You can opt for a chemical solution to killing weeds, or a manual weed remover. They're just as easy to use, but have no environmental impact." Cheap and clever » ADVERTISING FEATURE The creation of something extraordinary through the use of ordinary building materials turned heads at the Decoration + Design Sydney Expo by architecture firm Architect Prineas at the Sydney Exhibition Centre recently. One of only six architects invited to present a one-room display on the theme Eco Luxury, Eva-Marie Prineas created a unique bathroom that combined luxury and eco-friendly features through the innovative use of Boral concrete blocks and other standard building materials. Everything in the room was either bought online or second-hand, recycled or left-over building material. One wall of the display featured Boral masonry blocks installed on their sides to show the internal indentations and give it an arty honeycomb look. These ''pockets" also had a practical application as mini-shelves and cubbyholes for accessories and decorations. Another wall featured an eye-catching array of mirrors. The bathroom was lit by a chandelier. ''We normally use Boral masonry blocks for construction purposes rather than for aesthetics,'' Ms Prineas said. ''We decided to turn this tradition on its head and create a new look and feel by using a popular, well-known product in an innovative and attractive way. ''We also painted the blocks white to draw attention to the rough texture of the material and to add depth and a sense of elegance to the room."
