This program is designed to give a timeframe when equipment is going to fail by detecting loose wiring, failing bearings, drives and motors. • Combined its environmental program, Specialty Printing strived to cut costs by utilizing more efficient methods that increased productivity while reducing the waste of natural resources • Robbie is a certified SGP Printer—one of only five FTA members to have that distinction. • Landfill team members at Robbie sought out ideas on what wastes could be addressed or how to pre- vent items from becoming a waste—resulting in 167 tons that did NOT end up in a landfill. Lean and Green Two Companies Honored in the FTA Environmental Excellence Award Competition By Doreen m. monteleone The Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) is proud to recognize two of its member companies in the 2010 FTA Environmental Excellence Award competition for their outstanding environmental achievements. Specialty Printing LLC of East Windsor, CT took top honors in the competition with their process improvement initiatives and Robbie of Lenexa, KS, earned an honorable mention. Specialty Printing is a label manufacturer dedicated to the design and conversion of forms, labels and packaging products for the government, medical and retail industries. The facility implemented a recycling, conservation and cost savings project that had significant positive impact on the environment. It undertook the project to become a better steward of the environment in response to the demands of its customers and suppliers. This was combined with the company ’s effort to cut costs by utilizing more efficient methods that increased productivity while reducing the waste of natural resources (electricity, wa- ter and paper), and reducing the amounts of waste produced as a result of manufacturing. As a result of the program, Spe- cialty Printing was able to reduce running waste an average of one million feet per month, reduce set-up times by more than half, and significantly reduced water consumption. “By changing the belief first–that all employees can make an immediate and beneficial impact to the environment– changing the process became easier,” said judge Kristen Osborne of Clemson University. Specialty Printing has leaned up its operation, eliminating 167 tons of waste that will not end up in a landfill. FLX_May10_sec6.indd 146 4/17/10 10:46 PM
