Home Living : April 27th 2010
2 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, April 27, 2010 Smart ways » ADVERTISING FEATUREHOMELIVING Whether it's a plasma, LCD or a new 3D screen, households buying new televisions are buying them bigger. According to EnergyAustralia energy- efficiency expert Paul Myors, modern compact TV sets save space and look good, but large-screen versions can use four times as much power as a standard-size television. A large screen TV watched or left on regularly could be using more energy than the refrigerator, adding as much as $100 a year to energy bills. Plasma TVs generally use more power than LCD TVs for the same screen size. To help consumers, the Federal Government has introduced an energy labelling scheme for choosing which televisions are the most energy efficient. This means lower power bills if you choose a more efficient model for the same size screen. The new energy labels are similar to existing ones for washing machines, dishwashers and refrigerators, and the scheme is now mandatory. The energy label system will also be changed to increase the maximum possible rating from 6 to 10 stars, encouraging manufacturers to design more super-efficient appliances. If you are in the market for a new television, keep an eye out for the stars on the TV screen. Find tips on energy-saving at energy.com.au/efficiency or by calling 13 15 35.
