Home Living : May 11th 2010
4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, May 11, 2010 Smart ways » ADVERTISING FEATUREHOMELIVING THE possible tripling of domestic energy costs over the next 10 years has placed the heat on housing design principles for the vast majority of mass-produced homes in Australia. These designs often have poor orientation and energy-guzzling appliances, says Australian Institute of Architects building advisory service Archicentre. The energy-wise home needs a mix of well-insulated, high-thermal mass, intelligent glazing and ventilation. Archicentre NSW state manager Angus Kell said the energy costs were highlighted recently by Origin Energy chief executive Grant King. Mr King said energy prices tripling in 10 years would mean homeowners could be paying more than $100 a week for energy. He said cost-saving started with the design and siting of the home, including making provision for natural light in the living areas and gaining maximum benefit from solar heating and water harvesting. Archicentre does more than 20,000 house reports on these aspects each year. The first step in orientation is maximising the northern aspect, where exposure to the sun is best controlled. Eaves and pergolas can be designed to block the summer sun but allow winter sunshine to penetrate. Deciduous trees can achieve the same effect. It is important to position rooms based on access to views and sunshine. Insulation is crucial. Lining the roof, walls and floor can reduce heat loss in winter, and heat gain in summer. Glass is a very poor insulator. In an energy-efficient design think about size, location, glazing type and window coverings.
