HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, May 18, 2010 7 A clean pool in winter » ADVERTISING FEATUREHOMELIVING Just because cold weather has set in, pool-owners should not ignore their pools. By preparing your pool during winter, you'll save time and money, according to the Swimming Pool and Spa Association of NSW. The association's winter maintenance guide shows how to save pool-owners from having to empty the pool at the end of winter or having to add a lot of chemicals to clean the water. Follow this checklist: Backwash the filter and/or clean the cartridge with a recognised filter cleaner and degreaser. Clean the skimmer basket and hair and lint pot. Lubricate all O-rings with a silicone- based lubricant (call an association member pool shop or service company if a strong flow of water doesn't return once the filter is turned back on). Adjust the pH from 7.2 to 7.6 by adding acid if it's high or soda ash if low. Add 500g off granular chlorine or 750ml of liquid chlorine to the pool. Mix 750ml to 1L of a long-life algaecide that is specifically designed for winter and add it to the pool. Set the timer so the filter operates for two to three hours a day if not saltwater. Clean the salt chlorinator cell with a recognised salt cell cleaner. Adjust the timer to six hours and the chlorinator control (check the chlorine level in the pool for the next two weeks) to ensure a constant level of 1-2 ppm free available chlorine. Now you just need to: Check the chlorine and pH levels every two weeks. Empty the skimmer basket when full. Check the water level is half-way up the skimmer box opening. Ensure the filter pressure gauge says 'backwash monthly'. Details: spasa.org.au *Discounts off R.R.P. on selected ranges only. Offer supercedes all previous offers.
