Home Living : June 1st 2010
6 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, June 1, 2010 Let stripes add to the action » ADVERTISING FEATURE HOMELIVING Stripe it rich -- add sophistication, character, perspective and definition to a room by painting stripes this season. Don't forget that horizontal stripes make a room appear more spacious while vertical stripes make a room's ceiling appear higher. Here's a step-by-step guide to painting a striped wall and a list of things you'll need: Paint in pearl, metallic or silk effects; paint stirrer; drop sheets; scotch-blue painter's tape for delicate surfaces from 3m; measuring tape; spirit level; straight edge; pencil; brushes; roller and roller tray. 1 Prepare the surface Thoroughly clean the walls with sugar soap and rinse with water. Then scrape and sand any loose plaster or flaking paint. Fill any cracks or holes with suitable filler, then sand and dust the area. Mask up the edges and corners of your feature area with scotch-blue painter's tape. Apply your base coat of paint, usually the lightest of your stripe colours. 2 Determine the width of the stripes To determine the width of the stripes, try attaching strips of coloured paper to where you think the stripe should be. Then add a piece of furniture for perspective. Try different thicknesses to see which one you like best. 3 Measuring Once you have decided on the desired stripe width, determine the placement of the stripes. Begin measuring by starting at the center of the feature wall and work your way outward. 4 Mark lines Now that you know where the stripes will be, mark them with a pencil. Use a spirit level to ensure the stripes are straight and draw the lines in place. 5 Painter's tape the stripes Apply your scotch-blue painter's tape just outside each penciled line so the painted stripe will cover it. Press the edge of tape to stop paint bleeding. 6 Paint the stripes Fill in each stripe with paint. With a trim brush, paint over part of the tape and stripe area for a sharp edge. With a brush or roller do the rest of the stripe. 7 Remove painter's tape Once the second coat is touch-dry, peel away the painter's tape at a 45-degree angle. Touch up any bleeding with a small artist's brush. More tips: dulux.com.au We are a family owned company providing clients with the personal care and assistance that you would expect.
