Home Living : June 15th 2010
HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, June 15, 2010 1 Prime leather needs care » ADVERTISING FEATURE HOMELIVING Whether it is the traditional, buttoned Chesterfield or an uber-chic Italian design, the luxury of leather is revered around the world. What consumers don't realise is the best leather is not necessarily the right choice for them, explains Debbie Williams from Devine LeatherCare. Often customers ask for the best leather, thinking it will last longer when, in fact, it is harder to maintain. Analine leathers such as nubuck or suede are a top grain hide with a soft furry feeling. These look and feel great but are impractical, absorb liquid and fade easily. Analine leathers are not treated at the tannery with a coat of sealant. It is this protective coating applied after the dyeing process that helps prevent staining and can be wiped over using the appropriate products. It's not the right type of leather if you have children and pets. The most practical leather for families is corrected grain protected leather. Marks on the hides caused by scarring from wounds and scraping against trees are filled and sanded, losing their original grain. After the colour-coating process and sealing, the hide is put through a stamper to give it a more uniform grain and appearance. ''This leather can be used anywhere, is easily maintained and comes in virtually any colour,'' Ms Williams said. ''We would always recommend that a consumer look to buy top grain leather, even if it has been corrected, as it is the most durable. ''However, even the most durable and easy to care for leather has its enemies. Pet scratches are common; direct sunlight and perspiration also hurt. Leather is very strong and, even though pets probably won't get through the hide, they will dig into the outer surface, damaging the finish.'' The sun, on the other hand, will cause fading and drying which will eventually lead to cracking. ''We also need to take care -- especially on warm days when you stick to the couch. Acids in our sweat eat into the coating of the paint. The edge of seat cushions where the backs of our knees rest is most susceptible to damage, along with the headrest where scalp oils and hair products can accumulate. Maintenance is the most important factor in prolonging the life of your leather. Just by regular cleaning and conditioning, your leather can last up to 20 years. This should be carried out at least three times a year with commercially available specialist cleaning and conditioning cream. You should get a professional clean every 12 to 18 months to protect your furniture. There are some inferior leathers in the marketplace. Bycast leather is gaining in popularity as it looks good on the showroom floor. Bycast leather is made up of particles of leather. It does not have the durability of top grain and once the particles come apart, it can't be repaired. Devine LeatherCare has specialised in cleaning, maintaining and restoring leather lounges and car and boat seats, for more than 20 years, successfully rejuvenating leather and extending the life of furniture in Sydney.
