Home Living : June 29th 2010
4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, June 29, 2010 Keeping the elderly safe on their feet HOMELIVING » ADVERTISING FEATURE According to an Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report, more than 66,800 elderly people in Australia are taken to hospital in a typical year after suffering a fall, with research showing women at far greater risk. It is as simple as falling on loose rugs on the floor or the elderly tripping over things. The direct cost to the health system to help people aged 65 recover from falls in hospital was $566 million. The institute also found the deaths of more than 1300 people aged 65 and older each year were attributed to falls. Archicentre, the design and property service of the Australian Institute of Architects, says falls occur throughout life and it is in situations where the fall results in a life-threatening injury that it is a matter of concern. Serious falls involving fractures or injuries to the hip or thigh were most common. Environmental risk factors include slippery surfaces and uneven floors, poor lighting, poorly designed steps and stairs, lack of grab rails, and also hard surfaces causing injury on landing. But protruding door thresholds, loose rugs and carpet runners can also be hazardous, as well as tangled power and telephone cords. Monash University Accident Research Centre research says behavioural factors such as cleaning, DIY projects and gardening tasks on ladders, stepladders, chairs and tables, and wearing unsuitable footwear increases the risk of falls in older men and women. Archicentre's tips on fall prevention: A flat, accessible site is ideal for older residents who gradually lose mobility or balance and risk injury, while attempting to negotiate uneven paving or steps Weather protection between the garage and house will help reduce risks, such as carrying groceries in the rain over wet, slippery surfaces Interior colour schemes with good contrast helps people with diminishing eyesight identify doors, entranceways, and changed surface conditions Extra power points eliminate the tangles leads that can cause falls Impact-absorbent floor surfaces Level entry showers Grab rails in bathroom for the shower and toilet, and at front and rear steps Replacing worn, torn or loose carpet Reflective or brightly-coloured space strips on stairs Sensor lights to external areas How serious is the problem? One in three experience at least one fall each year Falls are the leading cause of injury- related deaths, hospital admissions and emergency department presentations in older people Most falls occur in the home Women account for most fall-related deaths and emergency department presentations Fractures make up 80 per cent of fall- related deaths Open 6 Days + Parking at door All work Guaranteed - Call now!
