6 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, July 6, 2010 Get smart with a solar system HOMELIVING » ADVERTISING FEATURE With changing government rebates and recent announcements of rising gas and electricity rates, locally-owned solar water heater company EcoSmart urges homeowners to switch to solar, not only to reduce electricity bills, but also help the environment. Traditional electric hot water systems are the highest household emitters of greenhouse gases and among the heaviest users of electricity, consuming up to 35 per cent of domestic energy use. By using a solar hot water system, households can expect to dramatically reduce energy bills, while producing 75 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions per year than traditional electric water heaters -- an overall saving of four tonnes of carbon. The gas- or electrically-boosted EcoSmart solar hot water system may reduce household energy bills up to 80 per cent or $4000 over a 10-year period, based on a family of four living in Sydney or Brisbane. The EcoSmart hot water system uses the patented HotLogic controller, which constantly searches for, and switches to, the most cost-effective energy source available. As HotLogic technology constantly uses the cheapest available energy source, whether it be solar, gas or electric energy, households are seeing their energy bills dramatically slashed and longevity of their hot water systems protected. The EcoSmart system also distinguishes itself from traditional solar hot water systems by doing away with the unsightly roof tank, which allows for a safer and more aesthetically pleasing installation. Solar water heaters receive Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) for their environmental efficiency. RECs play an important role in comparing the efficiency of different water heaters. The amount of energy an environmental water heater saves, will determine how many certificates are assigned to the system. Depending on the system chosen, this will have different effects on the homeowner's energy consumption, and the amount of money awarded back to the homeowner. RECs are separate to rebates and are monitored by the Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator (ORER), which is a statutory authority established to oversee the implementation of the Australian Government's renewable energy targets. Based on energy savings, ORER assigns an REC. The more environmentally friendly the system is, the higher the REC's value and discount on the cost of the system. Each REC assigned to a system is the equivalent of 1000kW of energy saved. When compared to equivalent hot water systems, the EcoSmart range offers one of the highest REC values on the market, thereby saving more money for the homeowner and being kinder to the environment.
