Home Living : July 20th 2010
4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, July 13, 2010 Termite danger » ADVERTISING FEATUREHOMELIVING AUSTRALIAN homeowners have been warned that a change in weather conditions could mean increased risk of termite attacks in their homes. Increased rainfall with poor drainage under homes, can create damp sub- floor conditions, ideal for termite breeding. South Australian Archicentre spokesman Edward Lukac said there were an estimated 130,000 termite attacks each year with a repair bill of $910 million, costing an average of $7000 to $8000 each to rectify. Archicentre, the building advisory service of the Australian Institute of Architects, says more homebuyers requested termite inspections. Mr Lukac said dampness under the sub- floor area could be the result of poor drainage, broken pipes, a leaky tap or a broken drain, all of which could result in water pooling under the house. ''One of the common factors influencing termite attack was poor sub-floor clearance in older homes,'' he said. ''This prevents good air circulation, resulting in damp soil and sub-floor conditions.'' Mr Lukac said many home owners inadvertently created conditions which invited a termite attack on their home. ''Unprotected timber in contact with the ground used in retaining walls and garden structures was found to be a common nesting area for subterranean termites,'' he said. ''And landscaping practices such as mulching up against external walls allowed subterranean termites undetected access into the home, even when a termite treatment zone had been put in place with air vents in the wall to allow air flow below floor level being blocked again, resulting in dampness," Mr Lukac said. ''Many termite infestations are initially caused by timber debris being left under the house.'' One wonder! Help is just one click away with the handy FirstCall pendant.
