to print layout and even minimizing web paths. The students contacted many industry professionals to gain advice and guidance in everything from inks and substrates to end-use requirement tests. The “THRIVE” amenities package would not have been completed without spending hours mixing ink in the ink lab, working to minimize delta E variations and achieving an overall color match. The key to Dunwoody ’s success was the terrific communication between design, prepress and press. This communication not only allowed for a better solution, but also fostered a great learning environment for the students involved. This team utilized market surveys, hours of research, and industry contacts to assure the substrate, label, container and designs remained environmentally friendly, economi- cally sound and graphically appealing. “ T HR IVE” is a printed product solution they can be proud of. ExcEllEncE in REsEaRch & GRaphics: cal poly Cal Poly ’s entry in the 2010 Phoenix Challenge College Competition involved researching, branding, and producing four hotel amenity products under the fictitious brand name: The Phoenix Luxury Resort and Spa. Five students competed as Cal Poly ’s team: Rachel Hutchinson, Amy Laun, Tessa Libby, Kasey Reed, and C. Michael Shedd. These students worked for six months preparing a line of amenity products that would speak to the premium nature of the brand they supported. The competition focused on four judging catego- ries: Research, Concept, Graphics, and Execution. As a university located on the central coast of California, the team saw it fitting to market to a beach resort for this year’s problem. As part of their preparation, the team spent a holiday weekend interviewing occupants at the central coast resort, The Cliffs Resort. From their interviews, they were able to come up with a logotype, colors, and the graphical and physical packaging for their products: shampoo, lotion, soap, and bath salts. The bottle selection and cohesive design choices reflected sustainability concerns, while still address- ing amenity market trends and preferences to provide guests with simple, yet elegant amenity products. Three labels and a soap wrap were all printed with white, a spot green, and black on a Mark Andy 2200-7 using water- based inks from CRI and substrates (BOPP and metalized board) from Avery Dennison. Plates were made in-house using Esko Suite 7 workflow and DuPont FAST plates. Traps, screening and overprints were all set manually by team mem- bers who completed all phases of research, branding, and production, with guidance from their faculty advisor, Professor Malcolm Keif. As part of their research, Cal Poly ’s team visited two bot- tling lines in Southern California: Marietta Corp. and Diversa- pack. During these tours, the team was able to fully grasp the importance of providing labels with the appropriate unwind orientation, label spacing, and proper trim dimensions.
