FLEXO Magazine : July 2010
Process InterFlex has always had an eye on best practices when it comes to sustainability. Our mindset as a lean manufacturer and our pursuit of low VOC printing made the move to SGP certification a natural fit. Our company has an established sustainability team, we have implemented a sustainability management system, and we are using the SGP program metrics to track and measure our progress over time. All of these practices are good for business, good for customers, and good for the environment. Product As part of our ongoing evolution in sustainability, we strive to make business decisions that positively impact our prod- ucts and the environment. To that end, we carefully select ven- dors and raw materials for both quality and sustainability at- tributes. We are looking for solutions to packaging problems by proposing products that reduce the carbon footprint in the application. This might include a renewable resource for raw materials, a reduction of total materials used, or even a more efficient transportation solution. In the end, we try to take a holistic approach and provide products that make sense for the application and hold true to our sustainability vision. Coating ExCEllEnCE intErnational Responses by George Fickau Plant In all departments, from human resources through manu- facturing, we had many operational and procedural policies. These policies/procedures have now been assigned a unique number, are dated when printed, and are posted on the CEI Intranet providing instant access to all employees. Produc- tion areas have all tooling and storage locations labeled. Cleaning and inspection reports are performed daily and the inspection reports are posted on the intranet. We have reduced our waste-to-landfill by 80 percent plant-wide by using employees’ suggestions. We receive invitations to local and national trade associated conferences where we share CEI’s sustainable methodologies. Process We are increasing our sustainability through recy- cling of packaging materials. This includes closed loop recycling of packing materials/components from our suppliers and to our customers. Increased recycling has allowed us to convert one of our trash compactors into a cardboard recycling unit. Our employees are better aware of the need to increase recycling efforts and are comfortable in seeking assistance with the disposal of non-traditional waste disposal items, e.g. pails and barrels. Product CEI’s customers and those who are considering CEI as a supplier of printed materials are extremely interested in SGP. CEI has two customers who are actively considering the placement of the SGP logo on their finished consumer products. Customers with knowledge of sustainable programs like the SGP and the Wal-Mart scorecard are well into their quest for sustainable packaging solutions. As an innovative packaging industry leader, incorporating SGP’s standards into our product offerings is the perfect way to share our com- mitment to sustainable manufacturing. n InterFlex Group: Certified SGP Printer October 2009 Coating Excellence International: Certified SGP Printer March 2010 54 FlExo july 2010 www.flexography.org suStaInablE From the First Print Run to the Last – Always Consistent First 4.0 gives you the tools you need to: • Optimize your processes • Improve color consistency • Minimize waste and downtime • Increase throughput and productivity First 4.0 has expanded coverage on: • Methodology for print optimization, fingerprinting, characterization, and process control • Process color calibration • Process control test elements • Near-Neutral Calibration (G7TM) • Color management • Color measurement and tolerancing • Substrate attributes and testing • Specialty inks and coatings FTA Members: $99.00 | Non-members: $198.00 (Quantity discounts available.
