HLC - HOME LIVING: CENTRAL, Tuesday, August 3, 2010 5 Storage solutions » ADVERTISING FEATUREHOMELIVING With the fast-paced and hectic lives we lead today, having a well-organised kitchen is essential. Today's kitchens are used as much for socialising as they are for cooking so it's worth focusing on smart kitchen storage solutions. Here Mal Corboy, Hettich's Brand Ambassador and 2009 Australian Kitchen Designer of the Year, shares some candid, helpful kitchen storage hints he has gathered after decades in the industry. ''A well-organised kitchen is essential whether it's a restaurant or domestic kitchen," says Mr Corboy. ''To organise your kitchen, start with the layout and decide where the ideal drawer locations and cupboard storage should be. To do this he advises: ''Start from where you work and then, where possible, place the drawers and cupboards in the order of the equipment and ingredients you use most often as you cook. That way, you're storing items for quick easy access.'' Soft-close drawer systems and quality ergonomic internal fittings are part of today's well-designed kitchens. Mr Corboy's best shelving and organisation hints for pantries and avoiding the dreaded second drawer utensil clutter are clear: ''A combination of large and small shelving in your pantry, that's not too deep so you can easily create a 'home' for everything and you don't have to reach over one thing to find another, will make the perfect pantry.'' Kitchen storage doesn't stop at drawers and cabinets. ''Think hooks and racks,'' he says. ''Hide a towel rack inside a cabinet door or maximise your utensil storage by including two-tiered storage trays inside the drawer." Renowned for his use of glass and lights, Mr Corboy believes a major consideration is lighting. ''Lighting plays a key role in creating perfect kitchen storage solutions. These days the standard overhead lighting can be enhanced by clever in-and- under cabinetry and even under- bench lighting.''
