Emotional intelligence is, again, reflec ted to
some degree in the general capabilities there
needs to be more of an emphasis in what
Ken Robinson in Element and Rachael Kes-
sler in The Soul of Education call a multi-
conceptual intelligence. As Daniel Goldman
explains in Emotional Intelligence, IQ
accounts for between four and 10 per cent
of career success, but emotional intelligence
accounts for the other 90 per cent. How
would our Australian curriculum look if it
included multiconceptual intelligence?
According to Erica McWilliam, we need
to develop hybrid spaces to accommodate
the way students learn in the 21st century,
incorporating a café pedagogy of 'just in
time,' 'just enough' and 'down the hall' where
students choose when and how to engage in
learning in the conceptualage. The design of
our schools is beginning to reflect this move
away from training, sorting and credential-
ling to self-selected learning and self-man-
agement. TheAustralian curriculum mustbe
cognisant of this paradigm shift.
Introducing and implementing any new
curriculum requires funding for profes-
sional learning. If ACARA is serious about
delivering a world-class curriculum, it needs
to invest significa ntly in professional learn-
ing. Systems and jurisdictions cannot be
expected to fund this alone.
Building capacity and then being able
to sustain it is important in any reform. It
takes time. If we are to develop effective and
long-term change in curriculumbydevelop-
ing teacher leadership as well as principal
leadership, then significant direction and
resourcing will be required from ACARA.
Education is not a race, it's a journey, but
if it were, it would be more of a relay than
an individual event.
It's only together that we will successfully
develop a curriculum that we can justifiably
call world class in name, design and practice.
Let's hope this is not another false start. T
