Home Living : September 7th 2010
2 HLC - HOME LIVING: CENTRAL, Tuesday, September 7, 2010 It's tip-top painting » ADVERTISING FEATUREHOMELIVING If painting is on the to-do list this Spring, make a note of these helpful tips from the Taubmans team: 1: If painting over marks or smudges which are reds, purples, and other bright colours with lots of pigment, to make sure these marks do not show up, apply a light grey or white flat paint over the smudge, then repaint over it again. 2: If painting at night, halogen lamps are a great way to get the same lighting as during the day. The number one tip in painting old rough ceilings is always use a dead flat ceiling paint -- great for hiding imperfections. Hot Tip: if painting ceilings, wear goggles 3: When selecting brushes and rollers, you get what you pay for. To clean brushes properly, use the two bucket system -- get the bulk of paint off in the first bucket, give it a good wire brush, then rinse in the second. 4: To get rid of dust particles when painting timber, do a sugar soap wash, using soapy water and sugar to wash. It acts like an exfoliation and removes debris and dust. Make sure you wash all of it off afterwards. To fix lumps in old paint work, it's just a matter of re- sanding and starting again. No amount of paint will get rid of lumps.. 5: When testing paint samples, get a test pot of paint and apply to at least 1sqmtogetagoodideaofhowitwill turn out. Always test a wall in the corner or behind the door so if a slight outline from the test does come through in the final coats, it will not be noticeable. 6: Outdoors, ensure you are painting in clear conditions. Start early in the morning as some paints can take up to 16 hours to dry. At night, heavy dew can ruin all your hard work. 7: Ensure you paint in a room that is above 15˚C as cold can prevent paint from drying. 8: When painting sash windows, to prevent them from drying shut, use a nice small brush to avoid excess paint seeping into the rails. Less is more, especially on insides of windows. Always leave windows open so it's easier to manoeuvre once the paint has dried. 9: Use drop sheets no matter how big the job.
