Home Living : September 21st 2010
8 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, September 21, 2010 Time for timber » ADVERTISING FEATURE HOMELIVING Those looking to start a home-improving project this season should embrace timber, instead of a paintbrush. Quick fixes aren't limited to a coat of new paint. Timber provides a striking, affordable solution, lending itself to an array of applications. From edging to vertical wall panelling, timber introduces warmth, colour and texture to re-invigorate the home. Hardwood timber decking can feature indoors as well as out, providing a fresh aesthetic. Use it to create a beautiful, rich-coloured tabletop and seating or as a decorative screen to divide the room. Outdoors, garden beds, entertaining areas and water features can all be framed with decking timber for a fast transformation. Structural hardwood timber can also be used to build a stylish pergola. Add to this by designing a timber day bed or garden bench to be placed inside. Additionally, using timber has environmental benefits as it is a natural and fully renewable resource. With this in mind, now is a good time to check whether the backyard requires any attention before the entertaining season begins. When it comes to hardwood decking, it is exposed to the elements all-year- round so needs to be looked after to maintain its rich colour and appeal. To preserve the colour, as well as improve the life of the deck, apply a finish to the surface and reapply as often as recommended by the manufacturer. Keep the deck swept to prevent the build up of dried leaves and debris and get rid of puddles of water sitting on the surface as this can result in the timber contracting when it dries. Regularly cleaning the surface will also help prevent spotting, which is caused by the build-up of materials such as metal. If the deck does turn grey from weathering, a solution of oxalic acid crystals mixed with water will help restore it to its original colour and finish. It's also advisable to inspect the deck every few months to see if any nails are sticking out or whether there are any loose boards. Equally check that there are no rotting boards as these will need to be replaced. For those who are considering installing hardwood timber decking for the first time, consider the environment. Native Australian timbers are an excellent choice as they are perfectly suited to Australia's climate and offer strength and durability.
