Home Living : October 12th 2010
HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, October 12, 2010 3 The great indoors » ADVERTISING FEATUREHOMELIVING Daylight saving has been a major boost to the trend in Australia to open up the house to the garden, creating indoor- outdoor living areas. Archicentre, the building advisory service of the Australian Institute of Architects, says the added hour of daylight extends the use of the home for entertainment and relaxation. Indoor-outdoor dining areas with folding doors have become popular. Archicentre Tasmanian manager Michael Cooper said one of the most cost effective ways of increasing the livable areas of the home was to extend out into the back garden through a deck. ''The trend is about making sitting inside feel like sitting outside," he said. Decking ''A lot of people still love the hardwood deck and it's often the most practical solution," he said. ''However, our architects have been having great success with natural stone products and polished concrete. ''Where a deck is not feasible, a courtyard fills the void. Courtyards also create northern aspects and privacy." Pergolas Leafy pergolas provide sun protection and garden character, but a lot of outdoor extensions have been defined by even more elaborate conservatory constructions with integrated lighting, fans, speakers and kitchenettes. Pools and water features are also popular. Outdoor Kitchens Indoor-outdoor kitchens will become one of the biggest changes. The outdoor kitchen is the step up from the traditional family portable barbecue, as entertaining in the outdoor-indoor environment takes on a more formal approach. Maintenance There is a trend to move away from lawn to low-maintenance gardens using paved courtyards, drought- resistant plantings that can survive weather extremes and potted plants which can be moved around. archicentre.com.au Metropolitan Built-in Wardrobes Pty Ltd FREE MEASURE & QUOTE SHOWROOM OPEN 6 DAYS Mon- Fri 8.00am - 4.00pm Sat 8.00am - 12.30pm T: 9763 5899, F: 9763 5877 www.metropolitanwardrobes.com.au Unit 6, 1-15 Wentworth Rd Nth, Homebush (off Bellona Ave) 15 YEARS GUARANTEED 2141582i hln wk39 Lic. 137155c Contact your local advertising consultant for information or call 9689 5395.
