Home Living : October 19th 2010
4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, October 19, 2010 All hands on to the deck » ADVERTISING FEATURE HOMELIVING Now that spring is here, homeowners are spending more time outdoors. With this in mind, now is a good time to check whether the backyard requires any attention before the entertaining season begins. When it comes to hardwood decking, it is exposed to the elements all-year- round so needs to be looked after to maintain its rich colour and appeal. To preserve the colour, as well as improve the life of the deck, apply a finish to the surface and reapply as often as recommended by the manufacturer. Keep the deck swept to prevent the build up of dried leaves and debris and get rid of puddles of water sitting on the surface as this can result in the timber contracting when it dries. Regularly cleaning the surface will also help prevent spotting, which is caused by the build-up of materials such as metal. If the deck does turn grey from weathering, a solution of oxalic acid crystals mixed with water will help restore it to its original colour and finish. It's also advisable to inspect the deck every few months to see if any nails are sticking out or whether there are any loose boards. As well, check that there are no rotting boards. For those considering installing hardwood decking for the first time, consider the environment. Native Australian timbers are perfectly suited to our climate.
