FTA TODAY CPP: Ride the Upswing Recovery Bodes Well for Converting Event With economic indicators in the black, printers and converters from across North America are expected to flock to Chicago’s McCormick Place Oct. 31- Nov. 3 for CPP Expo. Co-located with Pack Expo, the event will make one of the larger gatherings of packaging professionals this year. Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) members will be represented in force, both in the exhibition halls and on the show floor. Last year, amid a brutal economic downturn, a record 3,579 attendees hit the aisles of CPP in Las Vegas to see the latest in converting machinery and materials on display. The attendance confirmed that the industry was hedging its bet on a strong and imminent recovery—the signs of which are now being seen. SUStainable ReCoveRy The current economic recovery is sustainable, according to PMMI’s Fourth Quarter 2010 Economic Outlook. Although the report predicts the rate of recovery to slow noticeably in the coming year, expectations are that growth will continue. The report notes that leading macroeconomic indicators all suggest ongoing recovery through the remainder of 2010 and 2011. There are signs of slower growth next year, most notably from the U.S. Leading Indicator and the Purchasing Mangers Index, but there is no clear evidence to support a double-dip recession, the report says. U.S. industrial production, which tracked with total U.S . packaging machinery shipments through the last cycle, recently transitioned into growth. The development indicates packaging machinery shipments can be expected to rise during the second half of 2010. Supporting this assertion, U.S . packaging machinery shipments also showed similar perfor- mance to new orders of non-defense capital goods, also on the verge of growth.
