Home Living : October 26th 2010
HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, October 26, 2010 1 Timber terrific » ADVERTISING FEATURE Australians do creative backyard renovations very well, particularly using material in unexpected ways for dramatic effect, says TV personality and landscaper Jamie Durie. As a versatile product, timber lends itself well to innovative design. And with the warmer weather, Durie says this is the time to look at using timber to achieve attractive outdoor looks. Whether it's about laying decking boards in an unusual pattern or creating an impressive structure for entertaining, timber adds style. Durie and Boral Timber offer some tips: Screening Enclose or partition sections of the backyard to create separate spaces for different activities, such as an entertaining area and another for kids Fencing Hardwood decking is ideal for fencing, offering year-round protection against the elements and providing a smart, natural finish for the front and back of the home Edging Decking can be a decorative feature that lends itself to borders and edging. Use timber boards to add texture and colour around plants or herb beds Structural applications A durable material, hardwood decking can be used to build structural items for the garden, and for a cubby house Statement pieces Create an arresting timber centrepiece as a focal point around which the rest of the backyard design can flow Outdoor room Timber decking can form a continuation of the indoor living area, carrying the look and feel through to the outdoors for a harmonious, flowing aesthetic Details: 1800 818 317, boraltimberflooring.com.au It's the dry season » ADVERTISING FEATURE A recent change to strata by- laws means people living in apartments can now use less energy by drying laundry on their balcony. EnergyAustralia's energy efficiency expert Paul Myors said the Department of Fair Trading had made changes to the Strata Schemes Management Regulation 2010, ensuring energy-guzzling clothesdryers are used less. They are big energy-users costing 70c per cycle for a 5kg dryer with a 2.5 star rating. This can add up to $150 to energy bills per year for unit residents who dry up to four loads per week. Dryers also create more than 800kg of greenhouse gas emissions each year if used this often. The new by-laws will allow apartment residents to dry washing on balconies, provided it is not visible from the street. This helps reduce household bills and makes good environmental sense by minimising the use of a dryer. The new by-law does not automatically apply to existing strata schemes but can be adopted by passing a special resolution at a general meeting. Once adopted, the new regulations will allow all households to dry washing outside. But even in wet weather, clothes can dry effectively indoors on a clothes horse, on a line under the veranda or in the garage. If you must use a dryer, never put dripping wet clothes in it -- always spin- dry them first. Also, remember to clean the dryer's lint filter regularly to maintain full air flow, maximise drying efficiency and minimise fire risk.
