corrugated Great People Make Great Printing: The Driving Philosophy of Great Lakes Packaging It goes far beyond the press. High-quality corrugated print- ing begins with high-quality people, requires more than a little know-how, and a desire to succeed. The thought pro- cess is nothing new, but it’s still a rare thing to find a company that places such emphasis on its operation. Enter: Great Lakes Packaging, Germantown, WI. The com- pany dates back to 1963, according to its CEO and owner, Glen Arnold. “It was formed by three industry professionals. They leased a facility in Milwaukee, WI, but later moved to Germantown. As the years went by, in 1992, I was introduced to them, made a deal and bought the business from them. We now operate out of a four-building campus.” The huMan eleMenT Arnold knows all about hiring good people. When he first bought Great Lakes Packaging, it was all brown box produc- tion, with little or no printing. But by the mid-1990s, that all be- gan to change. The key to success, according to Arnold: Jim Nelson. “ He came to us in 1999 and brought with him a wealth of experience with large customers and high graphics,” says Arnold. Nelson currently holds the title of president of Great Lakes Packaging. He also sits on FTA’s Board of Directors and is chair-elect of FFTA’s Board of Trustees. “ When I joined Glen in 1999, my experience was mainly in the graphics side of corrugated with a few larger companies,” says Nelson. “I have a degree in packaging engineering.
