4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, November 30, 2010 HOMELIVING » ADVERTISING FEATURE Tips for a tip-top BBQ Once little more than a piece of scrap metal propped up on some bricks, where sausages went to be ritually charred to a crisp, barbecues have become a sophisticated part of the keen cook's armoury. But before you fire up the burners, take a little time to give your barbecue the once over. 1 Check for signs of wear and tear on hose fittings and seals. 2 If you are reconnecting the gas cylinder, make sure there are no leaks by coating the connection with a mix of detergent and water. Bubbles indicate there is a leak. 3 Clean the barbecue every time you use it. It's easiest to clean while it's still warm. 4 Use a specially formulated barbecue oil and grease remover from a specialist barbecue shop if the dirt is baked on. 5 If necessary use a scourer and warm water to scrub the cooking surface and then apply a thin coating of natural food oil on cast iron parts to protect them from rust. 6 Baking soda and scrunched up balls of aluminium foil are useful for cleaning the surface of the grill. 7 If your barbecue uses volcanic rocks they should be replaced every year. 8 Don't forget to keep the casing and trolley in good condition. 9 Don't forget the timber parts of the trolley will need to be oiled. 10 Routinely brush the surfaces of your grill with a wire brush.
