Home Living : December 7th 2010
2 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, December 7, 2010 HOMELIVING Don't forget the garden The Christmas break is almost here and that holiday you've been dreaming about all year is beckoning. The bags are packed, the fridge is on power save, the dog and cat are sorted and the paper's been cancelled. You're all set -- but what about the garden? An Australian summer can be tough on the garden and if it doesn't rain for a week or two, you may come home to a backyard more like a lunar landscape. If you can't organise for a friend to drop by and water every few days, there are a few things you can do to help the greenery stay that way. Short-term: 1. Add water crystals to potted plants and garden soil. They collect the water and gradually release it back into the soil 2. Add a wetting agent if the top layer of your soil seems to be water resistant 3. Water the garden thoroughly then add a generous layer of mulch to garden beds. This should be topped up at least once a year 4. Don't cut the grass too low or too often. Roots are vulnerable to the heat 5. Clear grass from near trees and shrubs as it competes for water and nutrients For the long-term: 1. Pick tough plants suited to local conditions 2. Plant groundcovers to keep soil moist 3. Lay gravel paths rather than concrete to absorb rainwater www.designarobe.com.au ph 9748 0844 fax 9748 0546 firstname.lastname@example.org Unit 2, 68-72 Derby Street, Silverwater 2128 Showroom Open 6 Days We await your visit to our showroom! 2185304i hln wk10 FREE Measure & Quote 10 Years Guarantee Sliding & Hinged Doors Polyurethane & Melamine Panels Glass Doors All Kinds of Walk in Wardrobes!
