Home Living : December 7th 2010
4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, December 7, 2010 HOMELIVING Secrets to a splendid spread You've read the cookbooks, watched the TV programs and now you're ready to tackle the challenge of hosting Christmas lunch for the family. Nothing in the world can come between you and your mission to provide tasty, memorable festive fare for your loved ones -- unless it's logistics. For some people, catering a lunch for 10-plus guests is easy. It's organising the house that is the hard part. If you want to host a lunch that will be remembered as one of the best, you need to plan ahead. Trawl your home for the best spot to host lunch for a large number of people. If no area is big enough to make everyone comfortable, consider doing canapes and drinks rather than a sit-down lunch. Make sure your kitchen is stocked with the right utensils. From appropriate-size pots and pans to pantry must-haves like oil, flour, sugar and spices, it is essential that you have all the right ingredients to get your dish from the stove top to the table. Invest in a plain crockery set that will serve more guests than you have invited. You never know who might turn up so it's important to have some spare plates, bowls and side dishes so no one feels left out. Serving dishes, bowls and plates are also staples for home catering. Remember simple crockery styles are best as they always remain in style and look chic. Like crockery, ensure you have stocked up on enough cutlery and serving utensils for the day so your guests aren't forced to use their hands to serve themselves salads and side dishes. Glassware is another vital element of hosting parties from home. Separate white and red wine glasses aren't vital but don't forget to stock up one of these as well as water and beer glasses, jugs and champagne flutes for the big day. Some little extras can transform your standard Christmas Day lunch into a unique, decadent occasion: gravy boats for gravy or dressings, matching salt and pepper shakers, bread baskets, festive-themed napkins, vases filled with fresh flowers or herbs and place cards are all great ways to jazz up your table.
