Home Living : December 7th 2010
6 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, December 7, 2010 HOMELIVING Follow our tips and before long you'll be sittin' pretty Summer and the festive season also mean warm weather and spending time outdoors. To make sure that time is pleasant and relaxing, the right outdoor furniture is part of the package. But before you rush out and purchase the perfect teak bench only to discover it turns your backside black-and-blue and won't fit through the gate, there are a few things you need to consider: 1. How much space do you have? If the area is small, don't choose outsize specimens. Take a tape measure when you shop to save finding out the furniture won't fit when it's there on your doorstep 2. Set a budget and stick to it. Furniture you can't afford won't make you happy 3. Take function into consideration. Do you need a table and chairs for outdoor dining, a comfortable lounger, a swing seat or all of the above? 4. How weather-proof is the furniture? If it's going to age out in the rain and full sun, it should be designed for that 5. How many people will you need to seat? You don't want to have half you guests roosting on upturned milk crates 6. Take maintenance into consideration. How much time are you prepared to devote and how much will be required? 7. Ensure furniture isn't too heavy, especially if you're going to be moving it around 8. Choose a colour that suits the rest of the decor, or play safe and go for neutrals, using colour in soft furnishings 9.
