Home Living : December 14th 2010
HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, December 14, 2010 5 HOMELIVING Personal growth With Christmas and New Year come resolutions: to lose weight, learn a new language, travel overseas, jump out of a plane or try sushi for the first time. The easiest resolutions are ones that can be achieved at home . . .or even in your own backyard it seems. Is it any wonder that budding green thumbs are turning their attention to gardening, not only to improve their surroundings, but to create a food source and calming zone to bond with family and friends? For those who wilt at the thought of planting an entire flower bed or vegie patch, there are other options. Why not try a herb garden? Easy to plant and cost-effective, they are the perfect way to dabble in the outdoors without getting overwhelmed. Whether you live in a house, townhouse, studio or apartment, herbs are easy to grow if you follow some simple instructions. 1. Choose herbs which are best suited to your lifestyle. If you're constantly buying basil, parsley, mint and coriander, then these are the ones for you 2. Are your chosen seedlings or plants suited to your dwellings? Most herbs taste better if they are exposed to full sun -- exceptions being mint and parsley. Mint must be grown in its own pot as its vigorous growth can overwhelm anything else 3. Keep your herb family to a maximum of three per pot to promote good growing conditions 4. Once they're planted, be sure to pick at your herbs constantly, as this helps them to grow stronger. Remove dead parts of the plant to keep it healthy 5. If you want lively not limp herbs, invest in good quality potting mix and be sure to water them appropriately 40% 50% 60% OFF!
