Home Living : December 21st 2010
HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, December 21, 2010 3 HOMELIVING Stay on top of Christmas shopping A prominent Australian psychologist has warned that festive shopping can wreak havoc on your mental and emotional health, and has devised her top tips for combating stress. Psychologist and media personality, Jo Lamble says facing busy shopping centres can be stressful. ''Those Christmas crowds can be overwhelming. Most of us would do anything we can to avoid the shops in December,'' Ms Lamble said. To help combat the Christmas crunch, Jo shares her best stress-lowering strategies: Have healthy expectations Lower your expectations. The day will not be perfect, things will go wrong and someone will probably get upset. Make a secret list of predictions of all the things that can go wrong and quietly count how many of your predictions come true. Start Making Lists Make a list of presents to buy, jobs to be done and what you need to buy to be ready for those hungry guests and drop- ins. Once it's on a list, it's easier to put out of your mind. Gather Junk Mail While those catalogues and brochures can be annoying, they can really come in handy. They're a great source of inspiration that can help you decide what to buy your nieces and nephews and the distant relatives you don't know so well. Have a Spending Limit Overspending will just make you stressed one month later when the credit card bill comes. Control your spending by setting a limit and sticking to it. Last-minute buys are most expensive. Shop Online More people are turning to internet to find what they want, which is fantastic. This is a really great way to help reduce Christmas stress. The CEO of online department store, DealsDirect.com.au, Michael Rosenbaum, says shopping online is the perfect way to take stress and guesswork out of seasonal gift giving.
