FLEXO Magazine : December 2010
• Repeatable print. Consistent color. It all boils down to two words: process control. Measuring results, tracking data, and eliminating variables is the name of the game. • From burly and brown to bright and bold, flexo post- print corrugated has come a long way. In the spotlight: Advance Packaging, which rebuilt both its headquarters and its business model. Fellow box maker Great Lakes Packaging talked about how finding good people helps bring good people (and success) to them. Honors & AwArds • FTA Excellence in Flexography Awards—Crisp dots, pristine flesh tones, images that just pop off the substrate. The 2010 Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) Excellence in Flexography Awards competition show- cased flexography ’s most cutting-edge work. Two days of intense scrutiny resulted in 154 awards being distributed. Nine printed pieces were chosen as the definitively No. 1 in their respective categories—the esteemed Best of Shows: Clear Lam Packaging Inc. , Wide Web, Kaytee Combo Bird Treats Wrapper Label Technology Inc. , Mid Web, Skintimate® Moistur- izing Crème Shave Pouch All Stick Label Ltd., Narrow Web, Dan Aykroyd 2008 Riesling Label International Paper Co., Paperboard, Watchman 03.06.09 Cup Paper and Design GmbH, Napkins, Fine Pendents Napkin Wellpappe Auerswalde GmbH, Combined Corrugated, Milkana Display SCI, Preprinted Linerboard, Taster ’sTM Rickard’s® Encore Envelopes Ltd., Envelope, Campari Multilabel Argentina S.A., Graphic Design, Café Bor- ghetti Liquore Label • Charlie Brown, converter of dreams to realities, entered FTA’s Hall of Fame. The 48th inductee, was right on the mark when he long ago said, “Overcome imperfections. Get creative. Control variables... No one in this business can produce quality work consistently without a great deal of creativity and attention to detail....Producing pro- cess work should not be something magical or mystical, but something we can print by the numbers.” His life and career experiences ranged from early days on a drafting board, to a seat at the table in the Flexographic Techni- cal Association’s Board Room (1987-1993). Brown is most often associated with Topflight Corp. and its York, PA plant, where he rose from artist to art director, manufac- turing director and vice president of manufacturing; but flexo drew him to the general manager’s role at both The Label Co., St. Louis, MO and CCL, Charlotte, NC. • Bobst Group/Fischer & Krecke GmbH’s smartGPS technology is the 2010 FTA Technical Innovation Award winner. Much like a global positioning system, it deter- mines where you are, where you want to be and what the most efficient route is to get there—all BEFORE the plate, sleeve and anilox are inserted into the press. The result is less waste, faster makeready, increased available press time, and improved print quality. The system calculates the optimum register and impression setting for each print deck and stores the data in rewritable RFID chips embedded in both the print sleeve and anilox roll. The press reads this information and sets the decks before the first impression is even made.
