Home Living : January 18th 2011
HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, January 18, 2011 3 Time to sow vegies HOMELIVING Summer begins winding down at the end of January and beginning of February, but this is often the time of year that sees the most growth in the garden. One popular vegetable to sow this month is silverbeet, which grows readily from seed and is one of the best of the cut-and-come-again vegies. Sow silverbeet seeds straight into garden beds and keep moist through the germination period. Start picking the outside leaves as soon as they are big enough to be useful. Flowers to sow now include plainclothed pansies. They don't often have the fancy faces that pansies flaunt, but they are tougher and cheerier. If you're using a bark or woodchip mulch, it's particularly important to feed plants well. As these mulches break down, they take nitrogen out of the soil, which runs the risk of starving your plants. Scrape back the mulch layer, spread fertiliser (Dynamic Lifter pellets can be used around all plants), water well and then replace the mulch. When preparing beds for new vegetable plantings, sweeten the soil with some lime or dolomite. Summer and early autumn are peak seasons for fungal diseases, especially if humidity levels are high and showers are frequent. Most fungal diseases are very host- specific (a certain disease only affects a particular type of plant) and all are spread by tiny, dust-like spores.
