Home Living : January 25th 2011
4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, January 25, 2011 New talent at Fair » ADVERTISING FEATURE HOMELIVING Clover leaves, Thai tradition, Gaudi and Australia's gold fields are among the inspirations for exhibitors in The Edge when it returns to the Australian International Furniture Fair next month. Held from February 2-4 at Sydney's Exhibition Centre, the leading design competition will celebrate its eighth year unearthing emerging furniture designers. Featuring 46 promising designers from around Australia and beyond, the competition will showcase 56 products in Student, Commercial, Concept and Green categories. Lighting has emerged as a strong focus, with a diverse range of lamps, pendants and standing lights entered. From the sculptural Twist Light by Ashlyn Miso Park and the woven Wheft056 Pendant by James Hargraves to the feminine Laced Light by Peter Oag, designs promise to be imaginative. Other highlights include a contemporary clock that appears to float, stools modelled on teeth and robots, and an outdoor chair made of bum-warming pebbles. Recycled cardboard and reclaimed timber continue to stand out as popular sustainable materials. More splash for your cash » ADVERTISING FEATURE According to EnergyAustralia's energy efficiency expert Paul Myors, pools can soak up more than $500 a year in electricity costs and produce 2000kg of greenhouse gases. Pool pumps are set-and-forget appliances, so smart meters are the best way to save on pool costs. Speak to your electricity supplier to see if you can get a smart meter installed. In some cases you can get it free. Pool-owners with smart meters in their homes can run their pool pumps during the morning and late evening shoulder periods to cut their electricity bill by as much as $255 a year compared to standard rates. If you can, consider buying a more efficient pool pump. Some new models are much quieter and you may be able to use them at night during off-peak periods saving you an extra $100 each year. However, it's important to first check that your neighbours can't hear your pool pump at night. Regulations require that pool pumps must not be heard from your neighbour's house between 8pm and 7am on weekdays and 8pm to 8am on weekends and public holidays. If your pool is not heated and you don't use it in winter, be sure to change your pool pump timer at the end of the swimming season. You don't need to run it as long during the cooler months. If your pool is heated make sure to use a pool blanket. It will keep heat in and cut running costs by up to 50 per cent.
