Home Living : January 25th 2011
HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, January 25, 2011 5 Start small to get big jobs done HOMELIVING Stepping into the new year means starting fresh. For the house it means a clean, neat and organised house after all the festivity. If you're wondering where to start, try some of these top tips. Start small and set easily achievable tasks that won't overwhelm your enthusiasm in mere moments; Clean and declutter a room at a time; Start from the top and work down. Dust cobwebs from ceilings, clean windows then vacuum floors; If your bathroom is full of scraps of discarded soap, mix them with glycerine and warm water, pour into a bottle and hey presto -- liquid soap; If you're moving furniture and discover indentations in the wool carpet, place a tea towel over the area and press with a warm iron. This only works on pure wool carpets; Clean out the fridge and freezer to cope with the potential overflow of festive fare; To make candles last longer, pop them in the freezer for 24 hours before lighting; Remove fingerprints on stainless steel appliances by rubbing with a dab of baby oil on a napkin; Go through wardrobes and toy boxes and get rid of anything that's broken or hasn't been used in living memory; When you open the mail, do it near the recycling bin so that junk mail, used envelopes and unwanted packaging doesn't start to pile up. As each cleaning and sorting task is accomplished, take time to reward yourself. It can also be fun to get your children involved . . . enjoyable family interaction which will stand them in good stead for the future too. It will also give you the incentive to keep going until your home glistens.
