HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, February 8, 2011 7 HOMELIVING The sweetest flower of all » ADVERTISING FEATURE Forget red roses. This Valentine's Day, think pink. Sweet Pea Pink Diana, is an early-blooming sweet pea variety that produces large fragrant blooms in shades of pink in February. Pink Diana has been bred specifically as a cut flower, but will also create a stunning display in the garden. If you don't have this at home, get some seeds and you and your loved one can plant some together. In couple of months, you will have beautiful cut flowers on show. Sow sweet pea seeds into damp, well-drained soil in a sunny position. Because Pink Diana can reach up to 2m tall, it will need to be grown next to a trellis, fence or climbing frame, or be provided with some other type of support. Remember, though, in warm areas February may be a little early to sow. To ensure maximum germination, it's best to wait until soil and conditions are reasonably cool. Late March or even April may be more suitable, depending on the climate. Sweet peas appreciate a sweet soil so, in most areas, it can be helpful to mix in some lime before planting. Pink Diana flowers will make a great show in the garden but can be enjoyed just as much indoors. And picking the long-stemmed flowers regularly will encourage more blooms to develop, ensuring that the show continues for as long as possible. Details: yates.com.au Freshen up at home With the new year, a new home is in order. Start by freshening the air. That means opening windows and cleaning them till they sparkle and then adding some fragrance. Bunches of fresh flowers are simple and stylish, and don't forget scented candles. Throwing a little light on the topic is another simple way to liven things up. Adding clusters of chunky candles to a table setting makes even a simple meal special. If you have a favourite lamp base with a shade that's seen better days, try making a new one in a fashion colour or adding a pretty ribbon or braided trim to freshen it up. When it comes to furniture, painting mismatched pieces in the same colour can turn a hodge-podge into a collection. There are some fantastic colours and finishes that will turn even the humblest of pieces into desirable additions to the decor. Even the outdoor entertaining areas can have a quick update when you repot a straggling combination of tired plants into a series of pots and planters in similar shapes and tones but different sizes -- don't forget to trim off any dead leaves and add fresh potting mix while you're at it. Before you know it, your home will be ready for another year.
