FLEXO Magazine : February 2011
Formula Flexo... Forum Season! How can I tell? Easy! Here is the simple list of ways: • The 2011 Excellence in Flexography Awards Competition has been judged. • A formal call for entries to each and every exhibitor at INFO*FLEX, encourag- ing 100 percent participation in April’s Official INFO*FLEX Exhibit Guide has been issued. • Internal FTA Forum Staff Planning meetings are popping up on my calendar. • The Full Forum Brochure opens from the back cover of this edition, last edition and next edition of FLEXO Magazine. • Preparation of the Forum Workbook and plans to fold it into FLEXO are moving quickly toward execution. • And the program chair has sat for our traditional interview. The results appear on page 12. • Oh yeah, and with the event less than 90 days out, registrations and inquiries are pouring in. No matter how familiar I become with the drill, I’m always impressed by the ex- pectations for, as well as the size, scope and stature of Foundation of Flexographic Technical Association’s Annual Forum and INFO*FLEX Exhibition. From the cadre of dedicated volunteers who assemble the agenda, to the print samples designated for honors—including “Best of Show;” to the technologies deemed “innovative;” to the spoken expectations of early registrants; the combination creates buzz and excitement throughout the marketplace. It’s a certainty that the event will prove informative, influential, eye-opening and quite the center of North America’s packaging/printing/converting community—its network central--May 1-4 in Indianapolis, IN. Pressing Forward Prepress, sustainability, emerging trends, new technologies, operational excel- lence, Lean thinking, FQC, FIRST, inks, substrates...the calendar is filled to capac- ity. Printer perspectives will be offered. Consumer product companies will outline their challenges and then put them to designers, trade shop technicians and converters. Members of those groups will seize the day and set about identifying solutions, all the while standing confident that they will meet the charge. Suppliers, be they manufacturers or distributors, will showcase their wares. Some will even introduce new offerings, others will unveil line extensions; all will speak to these tools and the abilities that they bring with them to enhance productiv- ity, reduce waste, control the printing process and speed packages to shelves. Mission- essential information that is not to be missed--this is the calling card for Forum. It has been for more than 50 years. Setting the Pace for Packaging Excel- lence, this year ’s theme, is quite the billing. It speaks to moving forward, improving performance, leading the pack...speeding to victory. Motivating Force With much to learn, many people to meet, new equipment to be seen, exist- ing business relationships to be strengthened, and new partnerships to be forged; Forum and INFO*FLEX demand a proactive printer’s/converter ’s and packaging professional’s undivided attention. Ask some of them. They ’ll tell you, just as they ’ve told me, the assembly of flexography ’s modern-day practitioners—now widely recognized as the single largest gathering of printed packaging trade smiths anywhere-- is inspirational. The experience is memorable, the take-home dividends are considerable, and the pace is exhilarating. Forum and INFO*FLEX, staged just days before the Indy 500, will be seen as the Grand Prix of flexo. publisher’s ink BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE FLEXOGRAPHIC TECHNICAL ASSOCIATION Roxanne Baker, Cryovac Sealed Air Mark Cisternino, Flexographic Technical Association Larry Claton, PCMC Greg Collins, C -P Flexible Packaging Michael Ferrari, Procter & Gamble Gar y Hilliard, Hood Packaging Michael Impastato, Flint Group Jean Jackson, Praxair Surface Technologies Eric Jones, The Label Company Gene Martin, The Robinette Co.
