FTA TODAY Invaluable and Transformative Best Label Goes on Record on TEST, FIRST Certification & Virtual Campus Training John Crammer, general manager, Best Label, Inc. , Union City, CA; recently spoke with FLEXO Magazine about becoming the first West Coast narrow web plant to incor- porate FTA’s Flexographic Image Reproduction Specifica- tions and Tolerances (FIRST ) Certification across an entire facility. Best Label’s San Francisco Bay area Hqs. has three facilities with a total of 32 narrow web presses and features complete in-house plate-to-production capa- bilities in each. It also has locations in Cerritos, CA; and Guadalajara, Mexico. Crammer describes Best Label as a high value printer for many industries, including wine, food & beverage and pharmaceutical & nutraceuticals. FLEXO: What got you interested in the Virtual Campus and FIRST Certification? CRAMMER: We went to the 2010 Forum in Las Vegas, saw the quality of the technical seminars, especially those relating to FIRST and G7, learned more about the Virtual Campus and were impressed and surprised by how far the FTA has come in just a few years. Additionally, we were shocked by the presence of so many Consumer Product Companies (CPCs). To have the customers, speaking at the seminars, about the need for consistency and repeatability from their print- ers; and then to have them tell us that they are looking for converters who can prove that they follow FIRST, well that really hit home.... We have since learned more, researched the entire FIRST certification pro- cess and FTA / TEST online training programs and are now completely on board. FLEXO: Your leadership team is now on Level II, FIRST Implementation Specialist training. What is your take on the program? CRAMMER: It’s self paced, so you learn at the rate that suits your needs. Those of us on staff, who have pro- gressed from Level 1 to Level II training, have come to appreciate the ongoing interactivity with other members of our group on the weekly discussion topic. Basically, this is just a great management tool. I am impressed with the quality of the program, as well as the integra- All Photos: Best Label John Crammer Less Bulk theDi fference! The program has created a real buzz within the printing community at Best Label. • FTA has got a winner on its hands in virtual training. It is absolutely vital to where we need to be as print- ers and it nails it on the head! • The system is completely supported by FTA experts, who keep it running 24/7, up-to-date and trouble free. It’s like hiring a training consultant to build and maintain an entire in-house program at really a nominal cost. • Once we educate the CPCs on what FIRST is, if they don’t already know, they immediately recognize its value in the same way they see ISO as a mark of excellence. FIRST really is like “ISO for Flexo” ... Our customers have faith in our process. • By incorporating FIRST Certification training, along with your own experiences as a printer, you are at a great advantage over those who choose not to grow past their own self-education.
