FLEXO Magazine : February 2011
FTA TODAY Once a printer, always a printer. You forge and hold a unique perspective. You become a flexographer. You can’t look at a printed package without envisioning the pressrun that made it possible. You see: • The substrate, being paper, film, foil, laminate, or some- thing else, being placed on the upwind. • The web path threaded. • Inks carefully blended and positioned in the pans. • Press stations cleaned and at the ready. • Anilox matched to the doctor blade. • Plates/sleeves mounted to the print cylinder • Past job tickets pulled and the data they contained refer- enced and repeated for the fastest possible set-up. • Trained press crews printing to the numbers—a team familiar with fingerprinting; optimization; and most impor- tantly, consistent, repeatable, high quality, print results. • Last but not least, you see satisfied customers reveling in the fact that end-users are grabbing their packages off store shelves. Mark Coffman of Dixie Graphics, who coincidentally serves as the chair for Foundation of Flexographic Technical Associa- tion’s 2011 Annual Forum and INFO*FLEX Exhibition, knows the drill all too well. He lived it at the beginning of his now four-decade career; continued to thrive on the excitement of a live pressrun as he moved into plant/production management, and constantly finds himself referencing those experiences in consulting with his clients today. This prepress sales executive remains a printer at heart. Packaging is his passion. Certain constants have remained at the forefront of Coff- man’s mind through the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and now 2010s: FTA, its member network, and its Annual Forum and INFO*FLEX Exhibition. He first attended the event in the late 1970s or early 1980s and rarely, if ever, missed one since; he contemplated getting involved with the program committee, way back when San Francisco was the host city (1989); but instead took to judging, or otherwise participating in orchestrating the Excellence in Flexography Awards for what is now 10, or 11 straight years. During that time, he watched the ensuing Awards presenta- tions at opening banquets at each successive Forum. Coff- man, more recently, stepped up to become Prepress Session chair for the 2009 Forum in Orlando, FL; then co-chaired the event in 2010 in Las Vegas, NV. This year, he becomes no less than master of ceremonies. First recollections remain fond memories.
