7 Flat Top Dots: A New, Innovative Solution The technology described in this presentation uses high output UV technology to generate a unique dot shape, known as flat top dots, to provide benefits including optimized surface textures to greatly improve ink lay down and solid ink densities. Compared to competitive systems, this system does not involve the use of inert gases or require expensive consumables. In addition, there are no steps added to the standard digital plate workflow (such as film or negative film lamination). FQC projects investigate selected process variables in order to further develop reproducible process concepts that will allow for measurable advancements in flexographic printing technology. In this session, individual project teams will present their findings and answer questions. This is your chance to interact directly with those who are working to provide the data basis for new industry guidelines and standards. Topics such as G7TM, anilox measurement and plate technology will be included. Several flexo sets were run with multiple inks on multiple presses on multiple substrates. The significance of the results to printers and print specifiers will be explained with assistance from Steve Smiley of Vertis, in addition to how the program can impact other platforms as well. Shawn Oetjen, Dunwoody College of Technology Reproducibility of Active Anilox Volume measurement methods Dan will overview the results of the gage R&R analysis of several different anilox volume measurement methods as well as the practical importance of the results. Tests were conducted by industry experts and students at Clemson University to determine reproducibility by various user skill levels. Results were statistically analyzed for significance. Daniel Reilly, Flint Group Flexo Printing with Ultra-Thin Plates (0.030”) Tests have been performed that compare 5 commercial plate hardnesses with 3 cushion tape moduli to offer clear recommendations to the printer converting to ultra-thin plates. In addition, micro-screening technology was tested with ultra-thin plate surfaces exposed traditionally and with advanced exposure (flat-top dot) methods to determine potential low solid ink density fixes. Results of these tests, a review of the economical how-to, and environmental impact of moving to ultra-thin plates in the press room will be presented.
