Header Data Driven Sustainability Sun Chemical's 2010 Carbon Footprint Report: Going Green, Following the Numbers With an eye on impact and a mind for measurement, Sun Chemical Corp. set out on a venture to deter- mine the carbon footprint of nine products within six product lines. The specific items chosen, which include water-based flexographic printing inks and water-based flexo dispersions, constitute 85 to 90 percent of Sun Chemi- cal's offerings. The effort represents the very beginning---the proverbial tip of the iceberg---of potential measurement opportunities. Specifically, they address the greenhouse gas (GHG) emis- sions associated with product manufacturing and distribution phases, i.e., a "gate-to-customer gate" analysis. However, as a pilot for expansion, one product (heatset ink) was examined throughout its entire lifecycle, including raw materials, sup- plier distribution, and other elements. Initial analysis led to interesting results. An average of 56 percent of GHG resulted from fuel consumption in the distri- bution phase, with the balance belonging to energy required for manufacturing. In the pilot lifecycle analysis, an estimated 88 percent of emissions were contributed by product raw material inputs. METHODOLOGY Sun Chemical's sustainability policy is based on the con- cept of eco-efficiency. Eco-efficiency is achieved by delivering economically competitive goods and services that satisfy its customers' needs and boosts quality of life, while at the same time progressively reducing ecological impact and resource intensity throughout the lifecycle. Sun Chemical has strived to be data-driven in its approach to sustainability. • Report studied nine products in six product lines • Conducted in concordance with the principles out- lined in ISO 14040, ISO 14044 and the PAS2050 • GHG emissions associated with manufacturing and delivery of Sun Chemical inks were calculated on a per pound delivered basis. • A pilot program using heatset inks incorporated ad- ditional data for a more complete picture.
