Home Living : March 1st 2011
6 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, March 1, 2011 Kitchens come alive » ADVERTISING FEATURE HOMELIVING The modern kitchen has come a long way from what used to be that area in the home where you cooked food. But the invention of more advanced ways of cooking brought with it the inevitability of creating the space to house these innovations. Therefore, the kitchens of today are all about storing these new inventions and cookware. Today we hardly have any kitchenware in its original form. You can buy a fire- engine toaster, a lime-coloured fridge, yellow microwave or candy-orange oven and a rainbow selection of kitchen utensils. ''White'' goods no longer have to be white, as kitchen appliances move away from traditional styling and become fashion statements. Fashion, style and elegance have entered our kitchens. What started out as a niche market with small appliances straying from the tried-and-tested white outer shell, now sees even refrigerators and cookers changing colour. The trendsetters among us will be clamouring to get their hands on this new wave of trendy kitchen appliances. It's a trend that is likely to continue with even better-looking designs and objects in new colour coordinates available for the kitchen in future. Time to go solar The energy-guzzling electric hot water system is being phased out in Australia so it's a great time to switch to a more efficient option and take advantage of government rebates. Energy Australia's energy efficiency expert Paul Myors said hot water was the biggest energy user in many homes, and almost 50 per cent of households had electric hot water systems that cost up to $500 a year to run. But lower-emission options like solar, heat pumps or gas can reduce your bill. With solar hot water systems, more than 65 per cent of your hot water is provided by the sun. Heat-pump hot water systems work like a refrigerator in reverse, taking heat from the air and transferring it to the water tank, while natural gas has less than half the emissions of electricity from coal. To be eligible for the State Government rebate ($300) you must buy and install the new system before June 30, 2011. The federal government rebate may change depending on demand. The federal rebates are $1000 for conversion to solar hot water, and $600 for heat pump systems. For rebate details go to environment.nsw.gov.au/rebates or climatechange.gov.au/government/ programs-and-rebates/solar-hot- water.aspx Follow Paul Myors' tips on Twitter @PaulMyors---EA Revitalise Your Tiles & Hard Surfaces! The great thing about tiles is that they outlast many other floor coverings. Unfortunately, over time, dirt can become ingrained in the tiles and grout joints, which can be very hard to remove by home owners. At Tile Cleaning Solutions, we have a way of cleaning that "hard to remove" dirt from tiles. The process we use utilises hot water at high pressure to remove all the in-ground dirt and oils from the tiles and grout joints. A powerful vacuum simultaneously removes the water and dirt from the floor, leaving it totally clean, just like the first day the tiles were installed. It sounds messy...it isn't. Because all the cleaning is completed in a dome that is attached to the floor, there is no mess or overspray. We can clean and/or seal all internal and external tiles, pavers, stone surfaces, stencilcrete, stencilled & concrete driveways. MINOR REPAIRS ALSO DONE BY A QUALIFIED TILER.
